Whole-Class Instruction

There are times when it is appropriate to teach a new concept or introduce a new procedure to all students at the same time. However, even within this context, the teacher may differentiate instruction. For example, during a whole-class discussion or presentation, the teacher may direct a question to a particular student, asking for a restatement, a summarization, a connecting comment, a clarification, a judgment, or evaluation. The level of difficulty of the question is meant to challenge but not overwhelm or discourage the student. All students benefit from being part of this type of lesson, listening to their peers, and responding not only to the teacher but to each other as well.
